Everyone who grows plants will run into problems with pests and diseases.  No one is immune. Dan Kosta will discuss ways to discover, identify and find proper treatments for many common  plant problems.  Dan has 30 years of practical experience in various aspects of the greenhouse industry and has often been the 'bug man" at the greenhouses where he has worked.

Jim Doyle founded Natures Way Nursery which specializes in Japanese Gardens and bonsai.  Jim has traveled the entire country and much of Europe teaching bonsai.  This will be a great opportunity to watch one of America's premier bonsai artists at work.

This popular series of education segments return this year.  They are intended to be a learning experience for the novice and a refresher for those more advanced.

Meeting topic: Return of the Juniper Workshop

As we did in 2004, this meeting marks the beginning of a group project.  At the meeting we will all start our own bonsai bought from cheap nursery stock.  Buy a creeping form of juniper, e.g. Juniper procumbens, J. horizontalis or similar cultivar.  A 1 to 2 gallon nursery pot size at $40.00 or less from someplace like Frank's, Home Depot, Wal-Mart, etc.

Do not work on your plant before the meeting.  Bring it to the meeting and our more experienced members will advise the newbies, as well as, all of us commenting on the possibilities of our selections.

NOTE: Bring your tools and a garbage or tub for a working surface.  We meet in a classroom and must leave it usable for the next group.

Get your tree!  It won't be a fun or skill building experience if you don't participate.

Test  your Bonsai knowledge in a game show setting.  Prizes will be awarded.  We will also review considerations and good practices for winter care of your bonsai.

Bring one of your own trees for this workshop.  Phil and some of more expert members of the club will be circulating to provide help and advice.  Please bring your own tools and a tub or plastic to contain any debris that might result.

We will also review last minute preparations for the Cantigny Show.

Meeting topic: Rules of Bonsai - Jack Douthitt

Past president of Bonsai International, Jack is very active with the Milwaukee and Madison, Wisconson bonsai clubs.  He is also author of the book "Bonsai, The Art of Living Sculpture".  There are several "rules of bonsai" that we use to guide us.  Many of the great bonsai trees do not follow these rules.  Jack will speak to these rules and why they should be considered as guidelines.

A Ben Oki styled tree will be included in this month's raffle.

Meeting topic: Wiring / Candle Pruning - Dahn Lindstrom

Wiring is a very important technique for shaping bonsai and takes practice to do it right.  Dahn will show us how it is done.  Candle pruning is a technique used on pines to control the growth and promote fullness in the foliage pads.  This is  appropriate to do at this time of year.

Brief review of how to prepare your trees for our upcoming bonsai display at Kane County.  Focus on the horticultural practice known as pinching.  Many neglect this practice as they feel it too difficult, or too time consuming.  Some think it might hurt the tree.  This session will relieve that anxiety.

We were unable to run this program in November as planned.  Our visiting master, Mike Hansen, reviewed the trees at the show and we have that on video.  Come find out what he had to say about your tree or gain insight on what a master has to say about improving a variety of bonsai.

The art of suiseki deals with stones.  These stones, which are sometimes called 'viewing stones' or 'companion stones' can take the form of landscape features, animals, buildings or just have interesting patterns or colors.  Tom has been collecting suiseki for a long time and will tell us how to collect them as well as what to look for in them.

The Cantigny Show 2004 is around the corner.  There is more to putting a bonsai on public display than showing up.  Learn what makes a "show tree" and how to get it ready.  Pick up useful pointers on how to select companion plants and bonsai stands.

Phil will select a tree from our Grow plot and style it.  He will, of course, be narrating his styling process identifying key considerations and options.  These comments have proved in the past to be informative and, occasionally, witty.

The styled tree will be the featured item in the meeting raffle.

Bring a tree to this meeting !    To have a tree ready for a show this summer or for the Cantigny Show in September you need to start now.  Selecting the tree and planning the styling and care until the show are done now for best results. We will discuss the key steps and their timing for peaking your tree for the show.  Our more experienced members will be offering assistance with questions and problems that you may have.

Meeting topic: Hands-on Tropical Tree Repotting

Put the knowledge learned in the pre-meeting topic to use.  Bring your tools, pot  and a tropical tree you want to pot or repot.  Members will be helping members to improve their skills.  If you don't have a tree to repot bring another tree for styling or wiring.  The club will provide wire, screens and Terragreen for repotting soil.
