Style Your Own  Bonsai Workshop

What better way to work on your bonsai than next to the Japanese Garden at the Fabyan Forest Preserve under the guidance of Bonsai master Ben Oki.  This is a "bring your own tree" event.

There is a limit of 12 participants.

Chinese Privet Workshop

These Chinese Privets are 10 years old with small leaves.  These are ready to be potted - bring your own or buy a pot at the show.  This workshop is for intermediate level bonsai enthusiasts.  Bring any bonsai tools you might have to this workshop.  You may also purchase tools at the show.  Wire will be provided.  Tree selection will be done by order of paid registrations.

Cost: $65 which includes plant material.

Root over Rock Trident Maple Workshop

Root over rock is a very striking bonsai specimen.  These trident maples have been trained over the rock. The workshop will take the next styling step.  This workshop is for intermediate level bonsai enthusiasts.  Bring any bonsai tools you might have to this workshop.  You may also purchase tools at the show.  Wire will be provided.  Tree selection will be done by order of paid registrations.

Kinzu Workshop

KINZU - TheWild Hong-Kong kumquat (Fortunella
hindsii) is a member of the citrus family that is very tolerant of pot culture. It blooms once or twice a year with fragrant white flowers followed by 1/2 inch "oranges".
 This workshop is for intermediate level bonsai enthusiasts.  Bring any bonsai tools you might have to this workshop.  You may also purchase tools at the show.  Wire will be provided.  Tree selection will be done by order of paid registrations.

Cost: $45.00 which includes plant material. 

 

PSBS member Dahn L. wins People's Choice Award at 2004 BCI convention in St. Louis.  The same tree takes 2nd place in professional division of 27th Annual Mid-West Bonsai Exhibition at Chicago Botanical Gardens

Bonsai Beginners Green Island Ficus Workshop

Have you been thinking about Bonsai as a hobby?  This is a great opportunity to experience the art and craft of Bonsai and get a starting tree.  The Green Island Ficus is a forgiving, quick growing tropical tree which lives indoors in the winter and indoors or out in the summer.  Several experienced members of PSBS will lead the workshop and offer guidance on basic techniques and care. Bring any bonsai tools you might have to this workshop.  You may also purchase tools at the show.  Wire will be provided.  Tree selection will be done by order of paid registrations

Hinoki Cypress Workshop

Ben Oki Workshop

This workshop is an opportunity to work with one of the leading Bonsai masters on one of your existing trees.  We had great success with this workshop last year and have the good fortune of being able to repeat it.  Some of the details are still being worked out but this is a great opportunity to work closely with one of our country's greatest bonsai talents.

 

Master Ben Oki has been growing and teaching bonsai since 1958, specializing in California juniper.  A frequent headliner at conventions he is well known for his free-form style, fine detail work, fast wiring and skillful tree-splitting techniques Bonsai Clubs International and the American Bonsai Society award the Ben Oki International Design Award and the Ben Oki National Design Award, respectively, for excellence in bonsai design.  

 

Bring your tree and bonsai tools to this workshop. Wire will be provided.

Beginning Bonsai Class:

PSBS member Dan Kosta will lead a class for bonsai beginners.  This 6 week class will meet on Thursday evenings for 2 hours each week.  The fee for this course is $100.00  A great opportunity to get started on the right foot in the art and science of bonsai.

Tropical Tree Workshop @ General Meeting

Mike Devore (on right) provides styling advice as others listen in. 

 

Workshop participants and kibitzing members work on tropical material provided by Mike DeVore as Mike (rear center) assists each.

In his second visit to Prairie State Bonsai Society.  Mike will again bring a selection of tropical materials.  There are 12 spaces open for this workshop.  This will be a great chance to learn about tropical bonsai and get a high quality tree as well. These trees will be available from Mike for $25 to $75.  The PSBS workshop fee is $40 via check made out to Prairie State Bonsai Society.  The workshop is open to the public. 

 

Additional trees will be available for purchase by anyone after the workshop.

These unusual trees are good for Shohin and will be 8” to 10” finished. Periodically throughout the growing season they bloom with a blue flower. Price of this workshop including the container is $50.

Mike collected these trees four years ago and has been cutting them back several times a year to produce really nice branching. They average 3” at the base and about 18” high. The price of this workshop is $100 plus the container. Mike will have an assortment of containers available in different styles and prices.
